Clearview AI Receives US Patent for Highly Accurate Biased Face Recognition Algorithm

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Clearview AIthe leading face recognition company that offers powerful and reliable photo identification technology has received another US patent – its second this year – for its unique, highly accurate and biased face recognition algorithm.

That “Scalable pipeline to prepare training data and efficient distributed trainer for deep neural networks in face recognition” patent (U.S. Patent No. 11,443,553), issued by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Clearview AI was awarded for its ability to create highly accurate, unbiased facial recognition algorithms from publicly available information.

Most facial recognition technologies use standard celebrity datasets for training, which do not contain a representative sample of all demographics. In contrast, Clearview AI, with its unique data preparation and distributed training algorithms, is able to create a dataset that represents all demographics.

Hoan Ton-Das, said the CEO of Clearview AI, “This award solidifies Clearview AI’s intellectual property protection and its leadership in the artificial intelligence and facial recognition market.” Ton-That added. “Clearview AI’s mission is to reduce bias in technology, and as a person of mixed race, that’s very important to me.”

Clearview AI’s facial recognition algorithm recently performed nearly flawless in the most recent National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) Facial Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT), #1 in the US and #2 worldwide in the WILD category, the most difficult category of the NIST facial recognition test, and achieved an accuracy of more than 99 percent across all demographics.

“Established companies sometimes wait with new technologies to see their viability and acceptance in the market, and then later copy innovations once they have proven valuable,” added Ton-That. “These patents help protect us from a potential future competitor who might want to copy our facial recognition search engine or our method of creating a highly accurate, biased facial recognition algorithm from large public internet datasets.”

Earlier this year, Clearview was AI US Patent Granted 11,250,226 Methods for Providing Information About a Person Based on Facial Recognition for applying its highly accurate, unbiased algorithm to search publicly available information from the open Internet, creating the world’s first facial recognition search engine.
