UNION, NJ (AP) – Gustavo Arnal, the chief financial officer of retail chain Bed Bath & Beyond, has died, the company confirmed on Sunday.

The company said Arnal died on Friday. According to the New York City Police Department, police found the 52-year-old unconscious with injuries that showed he had fallen from a Manhattan building. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the New York City Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death. The police said an investigation was ongoing.

Arnal joined the company in May 2020 having previously worked at Avon, Walgreens Boots Alliance and Procter & Gamble.

“Gustavo will be remembered by everyone he has worked with for his leadership, talent and leadership of our company. I am proud to have been his colleague and all of us at Bed Bath & Beyond and all who have had the pleasure of knowing him will miss him dearly,” Harriet Edelman, the company’s independent chief executive officer, said in Sunday’s statement .

Bed Bath & Beyond has faced turbulence of late, with its shares making a monstrous surge from $5.77 to $23.08 in just over two weeks in August, trading on the last meme stock craze years when disgraced companies suddenly became darlings of investors with smaller pockets. On Wednesday, the company announced it would close stores and lay off employees to restart its ailing business.

The Union, New Jersey-based homewares retailer said it would close about 150 of its namesake stores and cut its workforce by 20%.
