“This investment fuels our ongoing commitment to revolutionize the way people review critical product applications in zero-defect situations,” said CEO Justin McCoy. “In circumstances where people’s lives depend on the performance of a product, we need to be able to accurately assess the health of the product each time it is used.”

Launched in the summer of 2019, Scope is developing automated inspection technology that evaluates high-performance synthetic ropes for stringing equipment manufacturers and operators and users in the maritime industry such as tugs and mooring systems. This is the first outside investment the company has undertaken.

“Before Scope, the standard best practice was to inspect miles of plastic rope by hand, visually look for any damage, and make a judgment as to whether the line was safe to use,” explains COO Mike Poroo. “Our technology automates this labor-intensive task in real time, in tune with operations and with greater accuracy.”

Scope’s first product, Scope Control, will hit the market in spring 2022. The product will be a self-contained unit that will be positioned between pullers in order to inspect long stretches of tension cables. “With this product, we want to prove that you can rely on the technology as a measure of the quality of a line,” continues Justin McCoy. “The industry desperately needs a tool to standardize inspection practices.”

The Scope Control device uses the latest sensor and camera technology paired with deep learning neural networks to detect and classify the severity of damage modes it detects on a string. This is a significant shift from manual visual inspection, where an operator is expected to accurately inspect kilometers of rope at the same time. With manual visual inspection, results can vary from person to person by as much as 45%, while Scope Control technology is as consistent as only automation can be. Operators can continuously Monitor line health in real time with high precision.

The neural networks of the product were trained with very high accuracy by another Scope product, Scope Capture, which Scope developed for rope manufacturers. Scope Capture enables manufacturers to create accurate detection models specific to their own rope products.

The founders of Scope believe that rope users will demand high-precision models from rope product manufacturers, and Scope can serve both ends of the technology spectrum.

“We can equip both the manufacturer and the user of rope products in such a way that an industry-wide standard reference for the quality of a rope is created, which leads to a conformity that can be implemented and maintained.”

About the scope

Scope is an automated inspection company founded in 2019 to improve safety and compliance in industries that use synthetic ropes. The company’s Scope Capture and Scope Control products use artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect defects and damage on high-performance ropes, assess the severity of the damaged areas and their relationship to one another, classify them and communicate what measures are required to correct them Conditions. This happens in real time, in accordance with the operation, with a superhuman accuracy, with a self-improving software. Learn more at visionbyscope.com.
