A team from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine is building the first primary care health research database in Northern Ontario.
Using anonymized electronic medical record data, community and population information from the region is made available to researchers, clinicians and primary care organizations in the north.
“The data will be used to identify prevalent health problems and improve care,” the medical school said in a press release.
The project is coordinated by NORTHH – NOSM’s Research Toward Health Hub – which is housed in the school’s new Center for Social Responsibility.
More than $ 223,000 was raised in support of NORTHH, including contributions from the Northern Ontario Academic Medicine Association, Inspire Primary Health Care, and Public Health Agency of Canada alternative funding plan.
“NORTHH is the first practice-based learning and research network to offer unique population-based data sets for primary health care in Northern Ontario,” said the medical school. “It will also give priority to indigenous data sovereignty.”
The goal is to “work in partnership with communities to ensure that the principles of indigenous data sovereignty are upheld and to increase inclusive, equitable research capacity in primary care at NOSM,” said Barb Zelek, founder of NORTHH, NOSM clinical director Practice sciences and family doctor at the marathon.
“For northern primary care physicians and researchers, this means accessing a northern primary care database to answer your clinical and research questions, and an opportunity to conduct applicable northern-facing research to improve northern health outcomes “, she said.
Physicians and GPs are encouraged to join the NORTHH network to both contribute and access the database that will support their own practices in Northern Ontario.
“NORTHH’s database will be of value to physicians and researchers as communities face diverse health problems that vary widely from place to place,” said Erin Cameron, director of the NOSM Center for Social Accountability.
