You may have read that artificial intelligence can successfully diagnose skin cancer.
This story has been going on since 2017, which was also the year computers learned to predict heart failure.
Almost every week a robot learns to recognize a different type of cancer or disease.
The latest development is particularly brutal.
Apparently, AI can now detect how old you are – and how much younger you look after a facelift – with 100 percent success.
According to a new study, this means that in the years it gains, a robot can honestly tell you how successful your plastic surgery was.
“Our study shows that currently available AI algorithms can recognize the success of the facelift and even quantify the reduction in perceived age in years,” said senior author Dr. James P. Bradley in a prepared statement.
According to the author, the research team comes from âthe Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Zucker School of Medicine in Hofstra / Northwell; and Microsoft Corp â.

How does AI do it?
The tool that is at work here is AI âdeep learningâ – a multi-layered and complex system of algorithms that can be imagined as a problem solver.
Because deep learning analyzes a problem from many different angles, it teaches itself how to improve its tasks such as diagnosing illness or age.
In the study, the researchers used four different publicly available programs – so-called convolutional neural networks – that process images.
The four programs were trained to use facial features to determine the age of people from photos.
Millions of photographs taken from the Internet have been uploaded to these programs, where they have been sorted by age group based on the sagging and decay of their once adolescent facial features.
“By training on datasets containing millions of public images, these neural networks can learn to recognize facial features with much more ‘experience’ than a typical person,” said Dr. Bradley.
In fact, all four programs successfully determined the age of 50 study participants – all women who had undergone facelift surgery, with an average age of 58.7 years.
“The AI ââalgorithms used in the study were 100 percent accurate in identifying the age of the patients based on before photos,” the researchers said.
The algorithms then analyzed images that were taken at least a year after the operation.
In the ‘after’ photos, the neural networks recognized âan age reduction of 4.3 years after a facelift operationâ.

The punch line
Artificial intelligence doesn’t have the last word.
The women in the study had their own ideas about what they looked like and how far back in time they had traveled.
On average, patients saw a 6.7 year reduction in photos – more than an additional two years than technology allowed them.
“Patients tend to overestimate how much younger they look after facelift surgery, which may reflect their emotional and financial investment in the procedure,” noted Dr. Bradley.
